I have tried repeatedly at different times of the day. At LEAST it starts out by creating a Restore Point!! It told me I didn't need it because I already have it. at least for us who are still using "windows xp", the "windows update"/"microsoft update" websites, and everything else with "windows updates", is all screwed up..here is how i managed to work https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2497281

Installed some other thing that looked VERY flaky in the Services menu, then it corrupted my registry! Nothing was working. both of those "services" have to be enabled in order for windows automatic updates to work, and for being able to use the "microsoft update" website to install windows updates.. Download Windows Xp Updates Manually then, reboot the computer.. I'll post again in a few minutes with ....
