I have an apple display and when it was connected if would automatically know to play audio out of the display. But not when it isn't a hardware problem, and not when this non-existent problem would be Apple's responsibility to fix under warranty anyway. I use a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 for recording, and I use the headphone jack on the front of it.
